Kibabii University had the occasion of training its staff on the TVET CBET curriculum development during a four days’ workshop that was organized by the Directorate of TVET Kibabii University in conjunction with the National Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) from 7th June – 10th June 2022.
The opening ceremony was presided over by the Ag. DVC (Academic and Student Affairs) Prof. Stanley Mutsotso representing the Vice-Chancellor. He thanked the State Department of TVET for sending experts from its Department of Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) to train the University on Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum development.
“This is an indicator that Kibabii University has the potential to support the government in ensuring the success of competence-based education. I wish to assure the TVET Authority and the Kibabii TVET Directorate that the University management is keen on supporting this key initiative to ensure that the Institution has the capacity to develop and review programs which are aligned with the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC),” he said.
The training which was a follow up on an earlier training by TVET on Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Trainers and Assessors saw staff drawn from the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, School of Education, Hospitality, School of Business and Economics, School of Computing And Informatics and Faculty of Science benefitting with key competencies which will enable them be able to develop
curriculums that will not only equip learners with key competencies made up of skills, knowledge and attitudes but also ensure that the institution has the necessary capacity to handle the growing interest in TVET programs from the public.
The success of this training will see the University receive and train students in programs that have already been approved by TVETA which include; Diploma in Cyber Security, Diploma in Fingerprints & Biometrics, Diploma in Library & Information Science, Diploma in Banking & Finance, and Diploma in Environmental Management among others. Other programs that Kibabii University TVET Directorate has earmarked include Diploma in Criminal Justice, Diploma in Social Work and Diploma in Christian Ministry among others.
The workshop was officially closed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation) Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedict M. Mutua. In his remarks, he emphasized on the importance of competence-based training in the development of the modern world. Prof. Mutua informed members of the successes of these mode of training learners in most of the developed countries and expressed his joy seeing that Kibabii University is part and parcel of the national and international development agenda.
The DVC noted that TVET education and training is the second largest sector in the country after basic education and the University will not be left behind in the development conversation.
